Independence Day 2011 - FIREWORKS!!!

Just in case you haven't noticed...Summer is here!  The 110 degree thermometer reading should have been your first clue.  The upcoming 4th of July festivities are a pretty good 2nd clue.

Every year, as a nation, we take the opportunity to celebrate the declaration of our independence from Great Britain on that fateful 4th day of July, 1776.  There are the many official celebrations that include much fanfare, parades, political speeches and various types of ceremonies  Then, there are the traditions and rituals that have developed that we've grown used to over the past 235 years.  Of course, this refers to the BBQs, picnics, carnivals, fairs, concerts, baseball games, family reunions and of course...FIREWORKS!!!

Tuesday night marked the official opening night of all the neighborhood fireworks shacks around the Las Vegas valley.  (side note:  Does it really make sense for fireworks stands to be located at a gas station?...just a thought)  As exciting as colorful showers of sparks shooting up from a 1" cardboard tube set on the ground 15' in front of you is, we all know if you want real firework excitement, it's best left up to the experts who are able to legally launch giant blossoms of color that tower overhead.  Who doesn't appreciate a good fireworks show?

BOOM!!! A twirling stream of orange reaches skyward, slows and disappears.  Then...BOOM!!!  Colored sparks expand outward from the explosion, illuminating the sky and ground at once.

There is so much anticipation.  What color will be next? What shape will be next?  Will it crackle and sparkle, or will is whistle as it rises and falls?  Exhilarating, breathtaking and a great way to connect with neighbors and appreciate the liberty and freedom of being American.

If you're looking for a place to take in a fireworks celebration around the valley this holiday weekend, the local CBS affiliate KLAS-TV Channel 8 has provided a list on their website here...
